Tobacco Industry Efforts Undermining Evidence Linking Secondhand Smoke With Cardiovascular Disease

advertisement

The scientific consensus that secondhand smoke (SHS) increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk by 30% is based on epidemiological and biological evidence. The tobacco industry has contested this evidence that SHS causes CVD, but how and why they have done it has not been described....

The tobacco industry attempted to undermine the evidence that SHS causes CVD to fight smoke-free regulations while developing approaches to support new products that claim to reduce harm. The industry interest in preserving corporate viability has affected the design and interpretation of their cardiovascular studies, indicating the
need for great caution in current debates about future tobacco industry regulation and development of reduced-harm tobacco products.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Any person with any integrity would be able to name at least a few dozen people who are supposed to have died from SHS if there were any. Of course you would have to have proof. Makes me wonder why an organization the size of the ACS can't stand up to this need of proof. Could it possibly be because of an integrity problem? Lies have a way of catching up with those who have a lot to hide.

Anyone notice that the ACS estimates their figures? It's because they pick the figures out of thin air and can’t settle on any one figure. It started with 3,000 then 53,000 and as high as 440,000. They have yet to provide a verifiable bias free study. Their own study found no connection of SHS to Cancer. Their own Air study found that the air inside bars was 25,000 times too low to cause harm. When will they stop lying about it?

Apathy is the greatest sin against Freedom. Those who conspire to reduce freedom are also those who think it will never be their turn to lose a freedom they enjoy. It never occurs to them that they also pay in lost taxes, jobs and other unintended loss of their own. Apparently loss of integrity means nothing to them. All they have are the lies they spread in order to control others.

Anybody with any knowledge about causatation and secondhand smoke and integrity would know that is a totally bogus assertion.

It's because they pick the figures out of thin air and can’t settle on any one figure. It started with 3,000 then 53,000 and as high as 440,000.

Its apparent you do not know much about statistical estimates.  Its unclear where you get the 3,000 and 53,000 in anycase.  If you did any actual research where you would see these are based upon peer reviewed statistical studies.

Just because somethings are more difficult to measure and estimate hardly means they dont exist.

Apathy is the greatest sin against Freedom....Apparently loss of integrity means nothing to them. All they have are the lies they spread in order to control others.

Your attacks rely on apathy and ignorance.  Who exactly do you ment by "them" and "they." Are you including every US Surgeon General in modern history?  Are you including most public health officials and doctors.  Such smears lack integrity.

It is a fact that tobacco smoke is highly toxic and filled with many of the most carcinogenic substances known to man.  It is a fact that there is no safe level exposure to tobacco smoke and even the tobacco companies will tell you the same.  Ignorance of the risk is not "freedom."  The freedom to become addicted is ironic especially since most smokers are addicted before they are of legal age.  Freedom comes with the responsiblity to others and consequeces of your actions.

Are you worried about your right to breath clean air? I wouldn’t mind a little of it myself. I have yet to find anyone who can find it.

It’s not in your homes because of the materials it’s built from.

It’s not in your own Kitchen because of cleaning products.

It’s not in your yard because of the insecticides you spray.

It’s not in your car because of the materials used in the upholstery and the fumes that come into your car while driving.

It won’t be anywhere outside because of the pollution due to gas/diesel engines.

Look up Burning Issues and see the chart. Be sure to notice the least harmful item on the list. http://www.burningissues.org/comp-emmis-part-sources.htm

Ignore the fact that the EPA Report was vacated as fraudulent.

Ignore over 150+ studies that show no harm from SHS.

They don’t tell us that living close to major traffic hi-ways or large Urban areas increase the incidence of Cancer or Heart Disease by 50% or more.

Ignore the businesses going broke across the Country because of Bans.

What we do have, are agencies using misinformation to control others for profit not health.

Where do you get this "statistic" from?  Why do you ignore all of the studies that show harm from second hand smoke.
