Interesting study HERE

The monological nature of conspiracy belief appears to be driven not by conspiracy theories directly supporting one another but by broader beliefs supporting conspiracy theories in general.

I suspect that belief in contradicting conspiracy theories tend to be consistent with an emotional or ideological agenda rather than examine rationally.

For example, some people hate the President so much that they effectively turn rational thinking on its head and assume that negative theories are true until proven otherwise even if implausible on their face. Of course this is not limited to any particularly ideology or politics, but, the critics of the President and the Republican party have become more extreme. By combining the myth of the liberal media, distrust of the Federal government, and beliefs in radical opinions about the President, these theories become self-perpetuating. Evidence to the contrary is filtered out and discredited as being a product of the biased media and the vast Federal government (any positive story about the President is typically "proof" of bias especially if you already "know" that the President is always wrong). Any evidence viewed as supportive is given extra credence (it must be true to have not been stomped out by the government or passed along by the media).
